About BlackDog Glassworks
My name is Jenny Sharp and I am based in South East London.
I have been working with glass for over 15 years. I first studied at the City Lit, London and in 2004/2006 gained City and Guilds Certificate and Diploma in Stained Glass at Lambeth College. Since then I have undertaken private commissions and restorations, continuing to experiment with 'hot glass'. I have now completed the very final year at Central Saint Martins, on the Post Graduate Certificate in Architecture Glass (with merit).
With the move to Kings Cross, Glass will no longer be taught at Central.
I take part in the Dulwich Festival Artists' Open House weekends which are held in May each year.
My glass is now available for sale at North Cross Road Market (East Dulwich). I am there most Saturdays. Email me for further information.
My organic work is inspired by nature. I research my subjects (e.g. fish, plants) in great detail before interpreting them in glass. My fused fish have evolved from initially using glass enamels (paint) between float (window) glass, which are then fused together. I also use other inclusions such as small pieces of metal wire, which are painstakingly cut and shaped to the relevant scale shape of the individual species of fish. These scales are then individually placed onto the glass in such a way as to trap tiny air bubbles within each scale, when fused with another layer of glass. I also use hand made frit (tiny pieces of glass), powdered metals, meshes, pottery glazes, buttons, shells in fusing - the possibilities are endless.
I believe that by pushing the boundaries of fusing glass techniques, by experimenting with diverse materials, one can achieve amazing results. The medium of glass is magnificent in its depth and breadth of palette. For instance, by carefully selecting different textures and colours of glass, flower petals can be interpreted to good effect. Simple use of tracing paint can achieve shapes, which would otherwise be lost against the leading. My abstract work has been strongly influenced by the Bauhaus movement and in particular Joseph Albers. His theory of the interaction with colour and design has had a significant impact on my work. I like to use my organic fused pieces within an abstract framework.
Please do have a look at the galleries of my work which are all original designs.
